What are some of the real nasties to look out for in personal care products?
Ammonium Lauryl Sulfate - is a foaming agent commonly used in place of sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS).
Benzyl Salicylate - is used in cosmetics as a fragrance ingredient and as an ultraviolet light absorber is known as a human immune system toxicant.
Ceteareth compounds - which are blended with palm oil and used as a thickener and stabiliser, this substance is banned from use in cosmetics in the European Union and Canada.
Diethanolamine (DEA) - this very commonly used chemical is used as a lathering agent in soaps, lotions and conditioners. It is easily absorbed through the skin and builds up in organs. Animal tests show that is causes damage to the liver, kidney, brain spinal cord, bone marrow and skin.
Formaldehyde - used as preservative and anti-microbial. It is known to cause irritation to the eyes and throat and dizziness, headaches and weakened immune system.
Parabens - the most widely used preservatives found in cosmetics to increase shelf-life. They can cause allergies and skin sensitivities and are absorbed by the intestinal tract. Parabens used in cosmetics include - propylparaben and methylparaben which can also be listed as benzoic acid, 4-hydroxy and many other names.
Parfum / perfume and synthetic fragrance - a single synthetic fragrance can contain up to 100 different chemicals which can cause headaches, nausea, dizziness and fatigue and can exacerbate asthma.
PEG compounds - Polyethylene Glycol/Polyoxyethylene (PEG) compounds are used in cosmetics as cleansing agents. These can be readily absorbed into damaged skin and over time may cause premature skin aging when used in personal care products.
Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) - used as a foaming agent. It readily penetrates the skin and causes tissue damage that could result in liver, brain, heart and lung damage in the long term. However the major health issue with SLS is it's effect on the eyes. SLS can accumulate in eye tissue where it is retained for up to 5 days. This may cause eye tissue malformation and possibly cause damage to the protein formation in the eyes of young children and infants.
TEA - used in shampoos and conditioners. It is a skin irritant and a known cause of fatal gastrointestinal poisoning in laboratory guinea pigs.
